Till Deaf Do Us Part We couldn’t hear mummy’s heart beat when we were in the womb, But we were comforted by its feeling with each gentle boom, boom. We couldn’t hear mummy’s screams when into the world we arrived, But we knew with our first intake of breath, that we were alive. We never heard mummy say she loved us, when she first held us in her arms, But we knew she did, because she cuddled us tight to protect us from harm. We never heard sounds until we had hearing aids in our ears, But then we heard voices and laughter, followed by mummy and daddy’s tears. We can’t hear the noises that escalate from our toys, But we can throw and break them, just like other boys. We can’t hear the cat, as she comes up to us and purrs, But we can feel her silky coat as we reach out to her fur. We might never be able to hear the sadness, when the other cries, But we will be able to wipe away the tears, from one another’s eyes. We might never hear daddy read us a story, while we lay in our beds, But we will be able to feel his touch, as he strokes our heads. We might never hear the frightening thunder, which people dread, But we will feel the wet of the rain, as it falls on our heads. We might never hear the rustling of autumn leaves in the air, But we will feel the breeze, as it rushes through the air. We might never hear the birds sing at the break of dawn, But we will see the beautiful sunrise as each new day is born. We might never go and watch a concert, or a comedian, with our folks, But we will be able to remove our hearing aids, so we can’t hear daddy’s jokes. We will lead our lives like anyone else; with dreams and desires, We will aspire to learn all the skills that a successful life requires. We will always love and have one another, this is just the start. Harley and Finley, till deaf do us part…. Published in the August/September 2011 edition of the Church Magazine
