A Bit of a Ponder -a Christmas poem by 'Mary'

Has all of this really been part of your plan?
I can't tell a lie, Lord - I don't understand
Why an angel should say I'd give birth to your son.
I was scared but delighted as your chosen one
But it caused quite a scandal, when all's said and done
And the question still lingers - why me?

Thank goodness for Joseph, so steady and true
Who didn't desert me but listened to you
When you spoke in a dream (through an angel again!)
And told him to stand by me, fire and rain;
But then came the census, the journey, the pain -
Till we're stuck in this stable. Why here?

And then all those shepherds turned up in the night
And said they'd seen angels and followed a light
Apparently shining above where we are.
They talked of their Saviour born under a star,
Then left, looking thrilled - it was pretty bizarre -
But they did seem sincere, didn't they?

When Jesus grows up will he be the Messiah?
Will people believe him or call him a liar?
Will he rescue this country from tyranny's rule,
Be hailed as a king or dismissed as a fool?
Will he ride on a stallion or only a mule?
He WILL be alright, Lord, won't he....?

So here we are now in this animals' shed
Without much idea of what might lie ahead.
Enough of excitement, Lord! Give me a life
Where I can succeed as a mother and wife,
Deal equally well with contentment or strife
And not ask the question - why me?

(Luke 2:19 "But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart")
