Prayer will be the key to raising the final £250k still needed to finish the project. More detailed information will be distributed in due course but PLEASE START TO PRAYERFULLY CONSIDER YOUR RESPONSE NOW. – Whilst this project has much needed momentum at this point, none of us can become complacent and we all must sacrificially pull together one last time to ensure a successful conclusion. People are invited to bring their pledges along on this day but the opportunity to give will remain open for two weeks to allow everyone the opportunity to give. At the 6pm Service come and meet the builders John Butler (Director of Jaybuild Projects Ltd) and others from the development team will be on-hand to allay concerns, answer questions and generally help us understand the process. In the end we interviewed three contractors on 5 February. All made good presentations but one seemed to understand our needs the best, have a competitive price and be able to build in our timeframe. A number of routine checks and negotiations need to be carried out before we can formally announce the name of the chosen contractor -but it is enough to say that the Development Committee are very positive and we hope the project will move ahead quickly and without delay. Please continue to pray for the outcome of the project, the success of which is vital to the life of our church. 5 February 2010 Tender Presentations -added 13.1.10 Four contractor have been given the plans for the new centre and asked to tender for the work. They are giving presentations of their tenders to the Rector, Paul Benson and Philip Riley. After the presentation a contractor will be chosen and we will know the final cost of the project. Parish Update -added 31.1.10 The Rector gave a 'Parish Update' on Sunday 31.1.10. It included the Development project. He said most of the hurdles had been overcome and it was expected to start building in the summer and for the building to be complete by Christmas 2010. There was still a shortfall in funding but this would not stop the project going ahead. He emphasises it was vital to pray for the Tender Presentations (see above) so we got the right contractor at the right price. Listen to the update and the slides that went with it here. 2 November 2009 Work starts on the project Work to clear the ground and test the condition of the ground has commenced. See pictures here 1 November 2009 Breaking the Ground Service was held prior to ground works starting. During our service we: • Gave thanks for God’s leading and provision to this point in our project. • Remembered those buried in the affected area prior to the removal / relocation of their headstones. • Prayed for safety for those involved in construction. • Symbolically ‘broke the ground’ to mark the commencement of this phase of the project. Phil Johnson spoke at the service. He told us that thirty five years ago the then Rector, Vyvyan Watts-Jones realised there was need for a new building. A party of eight members of St Thomas' travelled to Wakefield to see a new building that had just been completed. The only two people left from that party now were Myra and he. Phil explained there was good reason for the delay. In the intervening thirty five years we have built a new Parish Centre at St John's, Walton (our daughter church until 2000, when it became a parish of its own), made the Garden of Remembrance outside the West Entrance and re-ordered the interior of St Thomas'. Order of service Listen to the service here 22 October 2009 Site clearance is due start on 2 November. This should put us on track to have the site cleared and test boreholes done by end of November. 20 September 2009 The Rector updated the 11am congregation on the Development Project (he will update the 9am and 6pm on the 27 September). He explained the problems we had overcome so far to get permission to build but now we had all the permissions we needed. Work on preparing the ground should start in October with building work early in 2010. We still had a substantial shortfall in funds but he was confident we could overcome this. At the moment he asked for prayer for the project. Matt also thanked those who had worked so hard to get us where we are now. Listen here to the update Read the article in the October 2009 edition of the Church Magazine 18 September 2009 We learnt this week that faculty permission has been granted. This means that no more permission needs to be secured for the building to go ahead. The Building Development Committee are working hard to bring the Building Project to completion. Tuesday 22 July Revised plans to be presented to the Diocese Advisory Panel for their consideration. Sunday 13 July Information leaflet and pre-pledge forms are available in church or it can be downloaded here. Rev Matt Barnes our Rector writes: Dear friends, In order to realise our long held building plans we need to secure a further £460,000 before October of this year!! This is an ambitious faith target, but with God’s help and your support we can achieve it. Ideally we would like to secure all of these funds in cash but as a building group and PCC we recognise that we may need to borrow some money against assets or from members of the congregation in order to realise such a large amount. It would be unwise for us to borrow beyond our ability to repay and so we believe we need to secure around £300,000 of our total in cash as a minimum. In order to help us realise what that might mean the building group has suggested that we break this figure down into 100 units of £3,000. This means that if 100 people gave £3,000 we would have the money we need to sensibly proceed. As there are about 100 people (or households) that are financially committed to the Church this would give us opportunity to respond equally (this is what we mean by a ‘giving unit’). Obviously it will be very unlikely that the money would come to us in such an ordered fashion – some people will be able to give more – others much more, others less. The principles of sacrificial Christian giving, obedience and faith are all important at this time. Can I urge you to prayerfully consider the vision and opportunity before us - we have in our hands the possibility of completing a project that as a church we’ve aspired to for over 20 years! I passionately believe that this new facility will revitalise our church beyond our wildest dreams (and I’ve got some fairly wild dreams!). However, it can only be realised if we all work and give together. What next? We will have a united “Commitment Sunday” service on the 12th October (the week following our harvest festival) – at which time we will receive in all our gifts & pledges. Plans need to be made now in order to enable us to build early next year ~ you will appreciate that the PCC’s building group cannot wait until then to know if all the money will be forthcoming and so it would be enormously helpful if you could indicate as early as possible what your intentions might be in order for the group to plan ahead with confidence on your behalf. Please prayerfully complete the attached response slip and return it to the Finance team in the box at the back of Church, envelopes are provided (only Philip Johnson or David Oldale will see these slips). Feel free to make your gift whenever you are able to on or prior to the 12th. Finally, can I emphasise whatever and however you give is enormously valued. If you’ve given in the past and are unable to give at this time can I say again thank you .. Your contribution has put us within sight of our dream. Please join with me in this fantastic opportunity, Yours in Christ. Rev Matthew Barnes Monday 7 July PCC Meeting The PCC approved the revised plans and authorised the Building Committee to move the project forward. Sunday 6 July Development Project Celebration and Revision There was only be one service in the morning at St Thomas' at 10.30am. We came together to: -Hear Matt, our new Rector's vision as he explains how he sees the way forward. -Pray for a speedy completion of this work. -Celebrate all that has been achieved do far. Matt said that we were building to the glory of God. Our buildings should be a place of hospitality, meeing, welcome and learning -especially for our young people. It should be a church facility rather than a community centre. We, God's people, the church family, should be the centre of the community. Our buildings should help us achieve this. Matt outlined a revised plan which included keeping the meeting room. Chesterfield Council and Derby Diocese are supportive of the plans. The new project is estimated to cost £950,000. At present we have £450,000 so need another £400,000. If we can raise this by the end of 2008 we can start building early next year. Matt said that there would be a Gift Day in October. Listen to the service here. Read Matt's sermon here setting out the revised plans. See the slides which include sketch plans and costings from Matt's sermon here. Church fund-raisers have launched the second stage of a £1m appeal for a new parish community centre. Members of St Thomas' Church, on Chatsworth Road, Brampton, have already raised more than a third of the cash needed for the Living Stones Development Project. Paul Benson, project leader, said: "We've raised £400,000 from gifts and pledges from church members as well as internal fund-raising. We're now appealing for people to support us in whatever way they can-whether it's spending a couple of pounds at our nearly-new sale on February 2 or with a business donation." The centre will be used by community groups, nursery, an after-school club,a history society, a walking group and a slimming group. Many thanks Tim Wheeler 25 November 2007 Open Meeting Paul Benson who is now leading the project since David Mouncer left led the meeting. The meeting started with an act of saying sorry to God. This focussed on saying sorry to one another, to our community and to God and was based around the themes of distraction, discouragement and doubt. A financial strategy was set out by Alison Gregory. Paul listed and answered some of the concerns and questions people had from the October meeting. As well as the raising large sums of money, Julie Lomas and Emma Atkinson encouraged the church to come together to raise money locally and at home. it should be 'Fun draising'. They gave several examples. Listen to the various parts of the meeting: Introduction -Paul Benson Focusing on people: 'Living Stones' -Emma Atkinson Feedback from questions following the October meeting -Paul Benson Feeding of the Five Thousand -Dawn Edingborough Financial Model -Angela Gregory Putting fun into 'Fun draising -Julie Lomas and Emma Atkinson Summing up -Paul Benson A Prayer Leaflet has been produced . This is based around the theme of 'Living Stones', a theme we had several years age. Although the project is about a building, it is being built for and by people Download it here Reading: 2 Chronicles 7:13-16 (NIV): “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.” • Healing Stone ---------- Pray that God will direct us and hold us in our desire not to sin so that we will receive God’s favour through His healing spirit. • Emerging Stone ------- Pray that we will pass through the darkness into a new light with bright new ideas for the project. • Developing Stone ----- Pray that our ideas will be acceptable to the planners. • Working Stone --------- Pray that all who are working on the project will have the guidance and wisdom of Christ. • Living Stone ------------ Pray that we all will be seized by an overwhelming desire to play our part and work together in harmony to move the project forward for the Glory of God. 14 October 2007 Open Meeting The Rector David Mouncer opened the meeting and gave an update on the Development Project. He and Philip Riley had met and had a discussion with the architect. • Estimated cost now of current scheme: £1.6m (including VAT and fees). This figure will increase by 6% a year for each year we do nothing. • Could we phase the building? Yes, we could, e.g. start with the building not linked to the church and develop the Tower at a later date. • What would we get for £800,000? Less room than we have now with the Meeting Room and two Porta-Cabins. • Could we simplify the design and economise on materials? Yes we could. Listen to this section here Paul Benson then looked at a simplified and economised design. • It is anticipated revised planning permission would be required. • Same ‘footprint’ but a separate building. • No Tower development. • Cost could be reduced to £1m including VAT and fees. • Economies such as rendered block work walls rather natural stone, carpet and vinyl flooring instead of hardwood, ceiling tiles instead of a hardwood ceiling, a gravel car park rather than a tarmac one etc. Building costs would also be less. • Still have accessible toilets, new kitchen etc. Listen to this section here The Rector then summed up saying we had to move on. • The Porta Cabins will not last much longer and the project is increasing by £60,000 each year we delay. • The next PCC meeting on 12 November will discuss the outcome of this meeting. It will look at how to bridge the funding gap. (There is about £400,000 in the Building Fund at present) • The PCC have proposed two more Open Meetings, 25 November when the PCC will bring funding proposal and one on 10 February 2008 when people can make a commitment to the project. Listen to this section here Eileen Balch then spoke about a ‘Passion for Progress’ The past year has been a difficult one for the Development Project. Lots of hard work has been done by the Development Committee, and we owe them a huge debt of thanks. The discussion this year has been how to finance the project. At the July Open Meeting it was made clear that some funding options were not available to us, e.g. Regeneration Funds and the majority of the church family were not comfortable with commercial loans, Lottery Funding or selling Rose Cottage. Lack of progress had lead to various emotions. There has been anger, confusion, dismay, frustration, disillusionment etc. Can the vision ever come to fruition? This and now the Rector’s news that he is leaving has affected the whole church. Nothing could be more humbling or painful. Earlier in the July a mature member of the congregation with spiritual standing brought the Rector and the PCC a passage from scripture: 2 Chronicles 7:14-16. This was a specific word from God for this time. This was then shared and discussed in Home Groups. Since then though we have had the summer holidays, the person who brought this passage has been taken ill and we are facing an interregnum. There is now uncertainty for the future and extra burdens on those in responsibility during the interregnum. 2 Chronicles 7:14-16 14. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. What does this passage of scripture have to say to us in this situation? It is very relevant to our complex situation at St Thomas’ now. • 14. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves…. To modify our scheme after years of work is humbling. We also have to come to terms that no outside body is going to come and help us financially. To acknowledge that it is our responsible humbling sobering. • ….pray and seek my face…. There has been individual and corporate prayer about the project. The Rector has set us an example of prayer being a priority and we are grateful. We must continue to pray seeking God’s guidance and God’s face. • ….and turn from their wicked ways…. Turn away from our ‘wicked ways’. Each of us can interoperate this individually. My thoughts are that our reservations of original plans have prevented us showing the real unity necessary. Therefore if we are to progress we must stand together with a common vision. We must gather up everyone up in the project, young and old, timid and bold and move forward. • ….then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. These verses have a promise from God to provide for our needs. We need to step out in faith. Corporate decisions need to be taken for a project of this magnitude. The next few months are crucial. Do we give consent for the project or allow Chesterfield Council to demolish Porta Cabins? If the latter happens it will be back to drawing board. Do we want a new rector to have to start the project again. The answer should be no. We are not the first church in this situation. In Acts 15 there were big issue and the way forward was discerned in humility (verse 28). The early church had challenges, they had to discern God’s will. Our project is daunting and worrying; it is still lot of money. But it also exciting to know what God might do. Its up to us to trust Him. Listen to this section here We then split in groups to discuss what had been said. Each group had members of the PCC in it who made notes to bring to the next PCC meeting. David Mouncer then wrapped up the meeting with prayer and left us with a challenge to learn the verse 14 from Chronicles. Listen to this section here August/September 2007 The Rector and Philip Riley met with the architect to discuss modifying the plans. Subsequently the PCC met to discuss the way forward. Another open church meeting is being held on Sunday 14 October at 4pm to put the proposals to the congregation. 15 July 2007 David Mouncer was unable to report back to the congregation (due to ill health) as agreed at the meeting on 1 July. Karen Riley (Church Warden) made the report. Option 1, 17 people indicated that this was their preferred choice. Option 2, 33 and Option 3, 37. No comments had been added by those who indicated Option 1 but some comments were made by those who indicated Options 2 and 3. Several of the comments overlapped, with several of those commenting on Option 3 having a leaning to Option 2. Examples of comments included: -Option 2 but seek various sources of funding to move matters on quickly. -Leave the plans as they are but seek more funding from the congregation. -Modify plans to leave out unwanted items and seek more funding from the congregation. -Increase giving, modify the plans. -The same plans but stage the development. -Present plans but have a separate building to start with. The Rector brought all the comments to the PCC on 9 July. He also commented that there appeared to be a reluctance by some people to take on a commercial loan, it being too risky or even un-Christian. After consideration and discussion the PCC agreed that the Rector would consult with the architect in early August to see what modifications could reasonably be made to the plans. The members of the PCC would also think and pray about the options. A special PCC meeting will be held on 22 August when a decision will be taken on the way forward. Please pray for the way forward and the PCC meeting. 1 July 2007 The Open Development Meeting took place on Sunday 1 July. It was chaired by the Rector and some 100 people attended. The meeting was split into five sections. You can listen to the recordings of each section.
June 2007 The Project Manager has completed and a summary was made available. The prayer meeting took place on 4 June. May 2007 The Project Manager has completed his report. A summary will be made available. There will be an Open Meeting at St Thomas' Church on Sunday 1 July at 4pm to discuss the report and way forward. To prepare for this there will bw an evening of prayer for the project 4 June at 7.45pm. April 2007 At the Annual Church Meeting 22.4.07 Karen Riley reported that the Project Manager would be reporting to the Development Committee in early May. The aim is to have the funding applications in place by the end of 2007. While this is happening contracts can start to be prepared. Professional help will needed for this. Listen to Karen Riley's report. March 2007: Project Manager Mick Topliss has been appointed from the Church Family on a trial basis.
