Our party was made up of Steve, Julie, Sam and Eleanor Lomas; Matt and Jack Barnes; Tim and Sam Wheeler and Gill, Martin, Eleanor and Alex Bailey. We went from Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat stopping overnight at Ross on Wye. So what were the highlights? There was an attempt at a ‘world record’ (?) -six people in a canoe. The inevitable happened –it sank but Matt stayed at his captain's post and was prepared to go down with his vessel! Tim’s first attempt at kayaking ended up with him taking a swim after thirty seconds! Launching their canoe at 50 degrees gave the Baileys a Titanic moment! They found a washing up bowl came in useful for emptying out the water from their canoe after it turned into a submarine! Again, the Baileys, in response to a ‘keep left’ instruction promptly turned right stranding themselves in the shallow water. Sam Wheeler caught a fish on his spray deck. Sam Lomas enjoyed seeing if his buoyancy aid really would keep him afloat - and yes it did! Julie enjoyed being ‘serene’ gliding past the duck weed which is in full flower at this time of year -a daisy like flower -very pretty (the flower and Julie!) Eleanor won the swimming race across the river beating Sam Wheeler into second place and Matt into third. We encountered a proper hunt with dogs who were on the trail of mink - whether they found any we did not hang around to find out The sun shone for both days, the sky was blue and the clouds fluffy and white. The river was very peaceful and we heard a cuckoo. Steve and Julie Lomas
