Rector's Christmas Message 2006
Published in the 2006 edition of 'Spotlight', a publication distributed free twice a year throughout the parish. 'What's Missing?'
It was the Christmas family service and all the children were gathered around the crib at the front of the church. 'Look at the crib,' said the Rector, 'and see if you can tell me what's missing'.
The children peered into the crib. Everything seemed to be there. 'Are all the people there?' he asked. They checked carefully: Mary, Joseph and the baby, wise men, shepherds, an angel; yes, they were all there. 'And is everything in the stable?' They looked again: a donkey, a cow, straw, a manger: yes, everything was there. 'But what's missing?' the Rector asked again. They shook their heads. They couldn't think of anything.
'This is what is missing!' he said and emptied a bucket of manure onto the church floor.
It says in the Bible that when Jesus came to earth he, 'humbled himself and made himself nothing'. In other words, he willingly gave up everything to be born in a smelly and dirty stable in the backwater town of Bethlehem. He gave up the glory of heaven and the worship of angels.
The God of eternity restricted himself and was born a child.
Now why would he make such a sacrifice? It must have been a very important reason. It must have been of crucial importance, even of eternal importance!
Do you know why he would make such a massive sacrifice?
