Steam –a Bygone Age Forty years ago, the last steam train ran its final journey. It was the end of the age of the steam train. The last steam engine was called the ‘Oliver Cromwell’. The well dressers make no apology for not depicting this particular engine on our well dressing. We decided that ‘Oliver Cromwell’ was not the type of steam engine we can remember from our childhood (yes, we are than old!). Our attempt to portray a steam engine may not be accurate to every detail, but we hope to have captured the essence of these magnificent machines. George Stephenson, the railway pioneer, built his first steam engine ‘Rocket’ in 1829. He settled in Chesterfield and was buried in Trinity Church in 1848. This year our chosen charity is NEDSCAN which has raised money for the Scanning Suite at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. All donations will be given to NEDSCAN. Last year, donations and proceeds from the sale of photographs raised Ł500 for PATHWAYS. |
