Pictures from the April 2010 3Fs (Fun, Friendship and Fellowship) walk. We walked from the Robin Hood pub on the Baslow Road up onto Birchen Edge to Admiral Nelson's Monument and then on to Wellington's Monument on Baslow Edge returning through the woods to Gardom's Edge and back then to the start. Total distance about 5 miles. The weather was warm and sunny with little wind and the visibility was good.
Nelson's monument consists of a gritstone column with a ball on top. It was erected in 1810 by a local businessman in honour of Lord Nelson. Three nearby boulders have been carved with the names of three of Nelson's flag ships 'Victory', 'Defiance' and 'Royal Soverin' (sic).
Wellington's monument is dedicated to the Duke of Wellington and a celebration of his victory at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. It was erected by a local called Dr Wrench, who as an army man, felt the need to counterbalance the memorial dedicated to Admiral Nelson.
